[environmental_description] => Västerås’ goal is to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by 90 per cent by the year 2050. This work is backed by an action plan for transport, energy, food and consumption. The city has made huge progress by, for example, developing the Nordic countries’ largest solar cell park, improving cycling opportunities and investing in biogas production in order to save 400 000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Västerås is the self-appointed energy capital of Sweden, with 10 per cent of the energy sector jobs here. Energy is an important field and is being further boosted through the collaboration of academia, the public sector and energy companies within the Energy Competence Center. For three years consecutively, Västerås has been ranked one of the four best eco-municipalities in Sweden.
[social_description] => Besides the environmental aspect, the city is working to evaluate the impact of the three sustainability dimensions within all its projects. Ecological, financial and social sustainability are to jointly and mutually support one another in order to create long-term and sustainable social progress.
[supplier_description] => Västerås has a long industrial history and many large international companies have their roots here. Present day demands that companies place on sustainable meetings and business travel have led to Västerås making a journey of its own. The percentage of environmentally certified hotel rooms in the city has risen from about 45 % to almost 93 %. Västerås’ congress centre was the first in Sweden to receive the Nordic Ecolabel and is pioneering in its work in many ways. Even the building is a certified Green Building.
[dmo_description] => Västerås Convention Bureau’s ambition is to contribute towards developing the destination’s sustainability of its meetings industry. Together with the municipality and the region, we work side by side with customers and suppliers in order to create a more sustainable destination. Thanks to the GDS-index we are taking the work to a whole new level and are competing on a global market. We aim to become a top-of-mind destination for sustainable meetings.

About the Global Destination Sustainability Movement

The Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDSM) brings together the sustainability pioneers of the business and leisure tourism world, working with destinations to co-create their tourism and events strategies, benchmark and improve their sustainability performance and transform value chains in order to catalyse regeneration.

Our purpose is to engage, inspire and enable the business events and tourism industry to become more sustainable and regenerative.

Our Methodology

In 2022 the GDS-Index used 70 indicators that evaluate destinations sustainability performance across four key areas. If you are interested, you can read our benchmarking methodology in detail here.
