[environmental_description] => With regard to the environmental challenge, Bilbao has come a long way in recent years. On the basis of the new Action Policies and Strategies, the foundations have been laid and the actions to be carried out in the coming years to achieve a sustainable city have been defined.
These include the Environmental Strategy and the Climate Change Adaptation Plan.
At the same time, starting from the natural environment surrounding the city, a strong commitment has been made to the following: sustainable mobility where, apart from the public transport system, the use of bicycles has been promoted by implementing a public bicycle system and increasing the kilometres of bicycle lanes, the reduction of GHG emissions, the recycling of waste by encouraging the increased recycling of the organic fraction and finally, ensuring excellent water quality by means of a high percentage of water treatment.
[social_description] => Different cultures coexist in Bilbao, with tolerance and respect between all the people of the city as a reference point at all times. Learning from others can only be beneficial and in this way we will become a better society.
We must not forget social sustainability whose main function is to find the right cohesion of the population and stability. This is achieved by valuing the importance of nature, education from an early age and promoting citizen involvement.
Taking the UN's SDGs as a basis, we are working to improve the quality of life of all our inhabitants and that of the visitors we welcome each year with open arms. To this end, actions are carried out to end poverty, achieve gender equality, decent work for all and in this way also achieve an end to inequalities.
In addition, every year we improve the accessibility of the streets and the public transport system for people with disabilities.
[supplier_description] => To achieve the common goal of making Bilbao a better place and a more sustainable city, the commitment and teamwork of all actors in the sector is essential. It is essential to involve and support restaurants, hotels, agencies, convention centres, caterers and universities in the conversion process.
We are aware that each case is different and they are at different points, but the key is not to leave anyone behind and to move forward together in order to position Bilbao as a pioneering sustainable destination worldwide.
By collaborating with suppliers to establish the roadmap and strategy to be followed, promoting the achievement of sustainable certifications or providing support for the drafting of a Sustainability Policy for each one of them, we try to contribute to the improvement of the city. At the same time, in order to increase their level of training, we promote training courses on waste recycling, reuse of materials or sustainable food.
We are convinced of the direction and objectives that the suppliers have defined and we are confident that we will gradually make progress and achieve our goals.
[dmo_description] => The city of Bilbao has been immersed in a process of complete remodelling for several decades. The result is remarkable: from being a completely industrialised city to the present day, where the city's facelift is remarkable.
A strong commitment to sustainability has been key in this transformation process. Focused on the values of collaboration, inclusion, progress and quality of life, Bilbao is advancing as a sustainable destination, integrating improvement actions in companies, different groups of society and citizens.
We are satisfied with the work done so far, but at the same time, we are aware of the need to continue improving day by day and not to be conformist at all.
This is what we are doing, proposing and promoting sustainable initiatives that help to achieve a more sustainable destination.
So far, we have perceived how the message has fully permeated in the citizenship and if we all row in the same direction it will be easier to achieve the objectives.

About the Global Destination Sustainability Movement

The Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDSM) brings together the sustainability pioneers of the business and leisure tourism world, working with destinations to co-create their tourism and events strategies, benchmark and improve their sustainability performance and transform value chains in order to catalyse regeneration.

Our purpose is to engage, inspire and enable the business events and tourism industry to become more sustainable and regenerative.

Our Methodology

In 2022 the GDS-Index used 70 indicators that evaluate destinations sustainability performance across four key areas. If you are interested, you can read our benchmarking methodology in detail here.
