Beyond being surrounded by a preserved “Green Belt” dating back from more than a hundred years ago, Strasbourg puts extra care in the preservation of its biodiversity. To that end, a strategy to rewild the city, named the Plan Canopée, has been launched in 2020. The metropolis watches out for air quality as well with special measures in case of pollution peaks and a low-emission zone, in which the more polluting vehicles are banned. It is also pioneer in developing soft mobility with one of the biggest French bike path network (600 kms), the biggest French tramway network, a pedestrian action plan as well as a strong position for innovative mobility. All infrastructures and facilities aim at offering more efficient, affordable and sustainable transportation means for residents as well as for visitors. The Eurometropolis of Strasbourg also acts for waste reduction and management, through education, information and the development of circular economy. All in all, the metropolis thrives to reduce its carbon footprint to improve the quality of life and reduce its environmental impact. A “Climate Agency” has therefore been created in 2021 to support and advise territories and stakeholders in their sustainable actions thanks to climate experts’ consulting.

Main congress and exhibition venues in Strasbourg such as the Zenith, the Convention Center and the Exhibition Center are certified ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 20121. The Exhibition Center, inaugurated in 2022, has been completely designed by its architect to minimize its environmental impact and to blend in the nature. Its structure is made of wood and large windows to let natural light enter and fits perfectly into the surrounding nature. A geocooling system connected to the water table cools the building and creates natural ventilation. 5000 m² of solar panels are installed on its roof to generate power for both the convention and the exhibition centers. A certain number of caterers, restaurants, hotels, or activity providers of the destination are also certified and/or take part in sustainable local initiatives, whether donations to associations or better supply – and waste management for example. Strasbourg Convention Bureau intends to share information to suppliers about local initiatives and best sustainable practices they can implement. Strasbourg Airport is engaged in Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme since 2021 and has obtained in 2022 level 2 “Reduction”. It aims at being carbon neutral in 2050. Local associations accompany and support organizations in their sustainable approach such as "Initiatives Durables" for local businesses and "Eco-manifestations Alsace" for event organizers that want their events to be more sustainable. An ecosystem of valorization of resources and circular economy is developing.
