A young, inclusive and eco-minded City with the italian quality of life: these are the pillars of the sustainability strategy that Milan is implementing, renewing its commitment to balance its role as attractor of global investment and innovation with an ever-greater attention to environmental sustainability and social inclusion. The City has expanded its vision of a sustainable future by including in its strategy critical elements for long-term development - public health, digital inclusion, economic prosperity, transportation, education and social services - accelerating progress towards reaching these goals. In fact, Milan is positioning itself as a destination that has the energy and dynamism of a global city but maintains a human scale: the ideal city to enjoy the Italian lifestyle based on art, design, food and culture. From a global perspective, regenerating tourism and events is imperative, while focusing on the needs of the residents, environmental priorities and the needs of tourists. Milan is experiencing a tourism renaissance, surpassing the 2019 record levels and is looking forward to hosting major events, starting from the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, which once again will showcase Milan to the world as it happened during World Expo 2015.

The threat of climate change has spurred Milano to enhance its commitment to environmental sustainability implementing solid measures for adaptation, mitigation and resilience. In order to accelerate the ecological transition, over the recent years Milano has joined prestigious networks and international agreements, such as: C40 Clean Air Cities Declaration, Urban Agenda Partnership on air quality, 2020 Resilient Cities Network, EIT Climate-KIC, CE100 by Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Moreover, Milano promotes “ForestaMi”, a key project for decarbonizing the City, where three million additional trees are planned to be planted by 2030 across the metro area. The environmental sustainability strategy includes the expansion and enhancement of the urban and suburban public transport network, according to the “15-Minute-city” vision. The City aims to electrify 100% of public transportation by 2030, and develop increasingly intelligent mobility inspired by the “Mobility as a Service” paradigm. In recent years two new metro lines have been completed with fully automatic driverless subway trains, and you can now reach downtown directly from the Linate Airport in 15 minutes (M4 Line). The surface fleet has been renewed by introducing electric buses - around 200 to date - and hybrid vehicles. Green mobility is boosted by 290 bike-sharing stations offering 3,650 regular bicycles and 1,150 e-bikes, together with 218km of bicycle lanes – not only as a way for residents and tourists for moving around but also for enjoying the City and its surroundings by discovering new environments and new sights.

The growth of Milano as a truly metropolitan City has been accompanied by an ever-increasing commitment to social sustainability. The enhancement of the suburban neighborhoods is at the heart of the City’s urban renewal model thanks to policies aimed to achieve proximity. In particular, the recovery of 7 strategic railway stations connecting the City center to the suburbs will allow to host the Olympic Village and new headquarters where primary cultural institutions will be based. Besides, rediscovering neighborhoods surrounding the historical City center is critical for urban marketing strategy: Milano’s storytelling is based on the City’s different souls, identities, landmarks and supporting local communities, which are promoted both as communication assets and new forms of sociality. The City’s social sustainable goals are focused on 3 policy areas: food, with focus on zero food waste and short supply chains; fashion; social innovation and resilience, by boosting projects that are co-designed with the City’s diverse communities to bridge over economic divide. Also, Milano is leader town at the National level in terms of gender inclusion and LGBTQ+ rights. Milano is home to a large and varied gay, lesbian and transgender community, in particular in the two queer-friendly neighborhoods of NoLo/Via Sammartini and Porta Venezia, where each summer the Milano Pride event takes place.
