Kyoto’s Convention Bags: Sustainably made while supporting traditional industries

Kyoto CVB works in partnership with the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts to make convention bags that use high quality, locally produced kimono fabric made by traditional Kyoto artisans. These bags allow meetings to connect with our culture, directly support Kyoto’s traditional industries and contribute to our local economy. They also give delegates a chance to take home a tangible reminder of their experience in Kyoto that can be used over and over again. We hope to set an example and encourage the meetings industry to avoid using cheap, disposable giveaways. We are actively working to make sure that our meetings are contributing to sustaining the priceless socio-cultural heritage of Kyoto’s traditional industries. These bags have higher price point than other commonly used options. However, this has not deterred their popularity. Meetings recognize that sustainable options can enhance the overall quality of a meeting. These bags are eligible for use with the Kyoto Culture for MICE Subsidy. Since the initiative was initially pioneered in 2016, by a medical conference that made 13,800 bags for a total value of approx. JPY 12.5 Million, many upcoming meetings become very interested in making their own bags.
